Let’s Fly

I have been working in Ghana for over five years helping to tell stories of local organizations that rescue and care for children who have been enslaved in the fishing industry on Lake Volta. After traveling through Ghana and visiting different aftercare centers, this was a day that stands out from the rest. At this center there is a school, and I was spending time taking pictures of children in the classrooms. Little did I know that the day before I arrived each child had been given a super-hero costume.

When the end of school bell rang, the children immediately reached into their backpacks for their masks and capes. They were ready to play! Eventually, I started playing with them. I would make a picture and then show them the picture of them flying through the air. The boys got very excited about this. At one point I had them jumping over me. I could tell the moment when this started to break down and one little boy landed right on top of me and my camera! A lot of laughter ensued, and they were quick to make sure I was okay. It was such a wonderful day filled with whimsy and play. With my camera I helped them to fly.
