Take The Exit
As an artist who likes to create immersive experiences through photography, I have created a new installation called, "Take the Exit." Imagine speeding down the highway, with the world swirling around you in a blur, only to find a moment of calm by choosing to take an exit. This installation invites you to step out of your routine, take a leisurely walk, and simply breathe. The concept for this project was sparked by memories of playing Mad Libs as a child. I wanted to translate the playful spontaneity of Mad Libs into a visual experience, allowing participants to embark on a surprise journey of their choosing. This interactive art installation is designed to elicit laughter, spark joy, and encourage visitors to cherish the moments in their lives.
When you approach this six-foot wall, you'll see empty spaces and a few simple instructions. Clear bins hold photos sorted into categories: places, animals, objects, smells, emotions, and words. Following the prompts and using the color-coded stickers, you'll pick a photo for each category and place it face down in the empty spaces. There's also a category for sound, where you choose a sound on a cassette tape and put it in the provided slot. Once you've filled all the spaces, walk around the wall to view the story you've created.
When you reach the other side of the wall, you’ll be prompted to take a selfie on your phone and place it at the start of your story—you are the main character. As you read your story, enjoy the surprises along the way. Play the cassette on the recorder to enhance the sensory experience. After reading this story about slowing down and noticing the world around you, you’ll walk away reminded to breathe and take the exit when life feels overwhelming.
Here is the story that was created in this photo…
Bonnie needed to get out of the house. Thought of a million bicycles! A walk to the forest was in order. The smell of cinnamon rolls was in the air. The sound of birds was all around. Going exploring in the world felt confusing. Looking at the buffalo was fun, and seeing the orangutan brought moments of calm. Being outside helped reset the day, bringing a feeling of being light. It’s a new day, breathe, take the exit.
You can experience this art piece many times, because each time your choices change the story!
